The delicate cells and follicles of your hair and scalp are susceptible to many different forms of damage, including scarring. In some cases, this scarring can cause hair loss.
Learn more about how scarring affects hair loss below.
Scarring alopecia. Scarring alopecia isn’t one condition, but rather a rare set of disorders that affects a very small portion of hair loss sufferers. In some cases of scarring alopecia, the body’s own immune system attacks hair follicles, causing hair loss. As the hair falls out, the follicles are often replaced with scar tissue. Scarring alopecia can be painful, is often progressive. The hair loss from these condition is often permanent, unless it’s caught early.
Scars from surgery or injury. Scar tissue often forms on the scalp at the site of an injury, surgical procedure, or other type of trauma as the wound heals. The abnormal collagen growth that results from the scar tissue can prevent growth of hair in that area because it no longer contains the glands or follicles needed to grow new, healthy hair. Luckily, treatments like NeoGraft may be used to help promote new hair growth around these areas.
