You may be surprised to know that weather conditions can seriously affect your hair, for better or worse. And if you’re one of the thousands of Americans dealing with thinning hair or hair loss, cooler temps can spell trouble for your strands.
Cold air is notorious for drying out even the healthiest locks, leaving them susceptible to breakage and further damage. Dry scalps also grow hair that’s more likely to break.
Keep yours protected with these tips:
- Don’t over-brush. Hair’s more delicate during the cooler months, and excessive brushing can break hair strands, sending even more down the drain in your bathtub or sink.
- Skip out on head coverings when you can. Hats are great for keeping your head warm, but they aren’t so great for your hair. All that friction promotes breakage of the strand from the scalp; so unless it’s really cold, pass on the hat (or, for the ladies, wrap your hair in silk scarf first, then put on the hat, to help protect your hair from damage).
- Condition. Conditioning can help keep your hair moisturized and protected from the dry heat of your home and the damaging colder air outside.
- Minimize washing, and go easy on heat styling. Washing and over-styling are easy ways to break dry, damaged, or thin hair. So take it easy. Try reducing your wash to 1-3 times a week, and avoid blow drying, curling, or straightening your strands every day.
