Having a head full of healthy, thick hair is a sign of youth and vitality. Men and women alike often pay lots of money to have luxurious locks. If you’re struggling to make your hair thicker, there could be things you might be doing that are more harmful than helpful. Let’s take a look at some of the common problems:
- Overstyling: Heat, product and tension are all included in your daily routine, and too much can damage or break your hair. Limit your use of heat to three times a week and always use a protectant. Be aware of the products you buy: Alcohols and sulfates can dry out your hair, while silicones are essentially plastics that coat and dull your tresses over time. Wear looser styles when you’re able; avoid the ones that pull at your hair follicles or use pins that cause too much tension.
- Understyling: Natural styles and dry shampoo might have caused you to skip your hair washing cycle. Though everyone’s hair is different, washing your hair every other day is optimal. Otherwise, oil and product build up and begin to irritate your scalp and clog your pores. Scratching your head too vigorously could even cause your hair to fall out!
- Pills: Medication for blood pressure, thyroid, or even birth control, can cause hair loss. Check with your doctor to see if there is an alternative that will work just as well, without the unwanted side effects.
- Nutrition: A diet rich in complex carbs won’t do anything for your hair or skin. Balance your diet with lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables to provide structure, strength, and shine to your hair.
