Having healthy hair takes some work. There are some habits that you should get into to help minimize unsightly damage.
Grooming
To brush your hair, use a brush with widely shaped bristles that have rounded tips or a comb with smooth, widely spaced teeth. These products will cause the least amount of hair breakage. The less your hair is manipulated, the less it will break – so only brush when necessary. Wet hair is more liable to break so dry it first before combing.
Shampoo
When your hair is dirty or oily, you should gently wash it with shampoo. This doesn’t have to be every day. Shampooing too much can cause a lot of breakage.
Conditioner
Conditioners detangle hair, which reduces breakage while brushing. For people with dry hair, conditioner can also be beneficial because it moisturizes the scalp.
Drying your hair
To dry your hair, don’t rub it with a towel – blot it. It’s best to air dry, but if you need to use a hair dryer, you should first allow your hair to dry a bit naturally. This will allow for minimal breakage.
Limit hair damage from a hair dryer by using it on the on the lowest heat setting and holding it at least 6 inches from the scalp. A vented brush will prevent high temperatures from building up on your hair.
