- Patients may choose non-surgical hair restoration methods for a variety of reasons. - What role do growth factors and platelets play in hair loss treatment?
- Platelet-rich plasma is enriched with powerful growth factors, platelets and bioactive proteins that support wound healing, tissue repair and hair growth. PRP is used in the prevention and treatment of female and male hair loss. It is also used as an adjuvant to hair transplant surgery. The platelets and growth factors in PRP stimulate dormant hair follicles and reverse the hair miniaturization (thinning) process that occurs in male and female pattern baldness. When used with hair transplant surgery, it can accelerate healing and enhance hair growth results.
- What role do stem cells play in hair loss management?
- All hair follicles contain stem cells. However, once the cells get old or damaged, they are incapable of regenerating the hair growth process. By injecting a patient’s own activated stem cells, derived from fat or bone marrow, a molecular signaling occurs that triggers the hair follicles to grow once again. Stem cell therapy for hair loss is safe, completely natural and produces permanent results. Stem cell therapy for hair loss can be performed with micro-droplet fat injections or through Dr. Stong’s advanced procedure technique using bone marrow. Again, non-surgical stem cell treatments for hair loss can be used as a sole treatment for hair loss or to support a previous hair transplant surgery.
- How are stem cells harvested?
- As it pertains to the use in hair restoration, stem cells are most commonly harvested from abdominal fat through a mini-liposuction procedure. These adult derived stem cells are housed within the connective tissue of the fat graft. They are released and become active from the portions of the fat graft that don’t survive. Fat is considered a stem cell rich tissue and is very effective for inducing hair growth. Although not widely used, Dr. Stong has also developed a highly sophisticated procedure that utilizes bone marrow stem cells for a very advanced and effective non-surgical hair loss treatment.
- What treatments are considered stem cell rich vs. stem cell poor?
- The concentration, bioavailability and quality of the harvested stem cells are determining factors in whether or not it is a stem cell rich or stem cell poor procedure. For example, platelet-rich plasma does contain stem cells, but the concentration and quality of these stem cells do not compare to those that are harvested from fat or bone marrow. Therefore, PRP injections are primarily used for their growth factors and platelets, but it is considered a stem cell poor therapy.
Adult stem cells, called mesenchymal stem cells, MSC’s, can be obtained from either bone marrow or adipose (fat) tissue. The fat and bone marrow stem cells are at this point considered equally effective for tissue regeneration, etc. Although it is true that fat has many more times the number of stem cells compared to bone marrow, they are only active and released from portions of the fat graft that don’t survive. With modern preparation techniques for fat, the vast majority of fat grafts do survive. Therefore, the MSC’s in that portion of the fat graft are not released, which limits their effectiveness as stem cells to the area the fat is injected. With bone marrow, all the stem cells harvested are active and directly injected into the intended targeted tissue to produce their desired effect. This means that bone marrow has a much higher bioavailability (100%) of its overall numbers of stem cells when compared to fat (less than 10%). Additionally, fat injections to the scalp may also provide a platform for an improved overall blood supply to the hair follicles, inducing hair follicles and hair stem cells to grow while reversing hair loss.
Adult stem cells are thought of as young cells that are unspecialized, meaning they are capable of forming into various tissues. In hair there are stem cells in the hair follicles that are targeted with all these treatments to induce them to differentiate into hair cells and grow hair. These hair stem cells are induced by PRP with platelets and growth factors. Stem cells additionally release very powerful mediators that stimulate these hair stem cells to begin hair growth. The goal of all of these procedures is to get more hair follicles and their stem cells to enter into a growth phase.
- What role does microneedling play in hair loss treatments?
- Microneedling is a procedure that involves tiny-tip needles that briefly puncture the surface of the skin or scalp. This initiates a wound healing process within the body. Patients who have not had success with medications often choose laser therapy for better short-term results. Repeated treatments are necessary to maintain results and it is not as effective or permanent as PRP or stem cell treatments.
- How can nutrition affect hair loss?
- Your diet and nutrition play a large role in all of your body systems; including hair growth. There are specific nutrients that your body needs to support healthy hair growth. While taking nutritional supplements may reduce or delay certain types of hair loss, they should not be considered a solution for reversing significant baldness. In such cases, hair transplant surgery is the most long-term solution and other non-surgical approaches are certainly more effective than simply taking vitamins or nutrients.
- What medications are used in hair loss treatment?
- Medications for hair loss do not work for everyone. However, they can work to stop the progression of male pattern baldness and stimulate new hair growth in some patients. Younger patients with beginning stages of hair loss or hair thinning make better candidates for this type of non-surgical approach. Medications can be applied topically or taken orally. Two of the most common medications prescribed are Rogaine with Minoxidil and Propecia.
